Eerie Lake (creative nonfiction)

About “Eerie Lake”

In “Eerie Lake,” my childhood fascination with mythological monsters and the tragic drowning of a young classmate unleashes a true horror story about the invasion of sea serpents that once decimated most of the fish populations in all of the Great Lakes above Niagara Falls, bringing about an aquatic apocalypse. As they ran out of food, the sea lamprey began to attack “anything that moved” (read a 1950 news article), from swimming children to motorized boats. As you might guess, they didn’t invade on their own but were floated in on the rudders of well-intentioned human ingenuity.
